BENGALURU, India — Functional verification products and services specialist Axiom Design Automation has opened a second Indian R&D center here. The center will be bigger than the one it set up less than a month ago in Manipal in southwest India.

Staffing for the two centers will be more than doubled from the current level of 70 during 2008. About $3 million will be invested in the two centers. The Indian operations will be headed by managing director R. Ravi Shankar, Axiom said.

Axiom (Milpitas (Calif.) originally founded in 1999 as @HDL Inc., focuses on verification products, IP and services. The company claims to be profitable, though sales were not disclosed.

Investor and EDA veteran Prabhu Goel said Axiom is well positioned. "Most EDA companies have not approached the problem of how to take design data from multiple sources and run it seamlessly, and this is where Axiom has an advantage," Goel said.

"With the number of design services companies in India and with verification being the single largest task in design itself, India continues to have a major impact in our overall business," added Axiom president and CEO Badru Agarwala. Axiom has 1,500 global licenses and its verification products have been used in 15 device tapeouts.

The Mangalore center will focus on ASIC design and verification IP development. The Bengaluru center will drive Axiom's services business here as the number of Indian-based design houses grows.

Last year, Axiom acquired Indian verification services provider SysChip Design Technologies. The deal added SysChip's protocol coverage technology to Axiom's multi-CPU MPSim simulator.
